The Baby

On March 13th at 12:00 AM, my book baby was born weighing in at…I don’t know, 3 ounces?

Let’s go with it.

This was not an easy labor.

Still easier than my actual babies who had gigantic heads…but that’s a story for another time.

Or no time.

Let’s go with no time. You don’t want to hear that.

Moving on.

Let’s talk about French Vanilla & Felonies. This book’s birth started back in 2016 when I was offered a publishing contract. Back then, the book was titled FOR RENT (ever heard of it?). FOR RENT did well. So well, in fact, that my publisher offered me a second book deal.

Then the doodie hit the fan (that’s the technical term for #2 in my house) and yada…yada…yada….(that’s the technical term for I can’t legally talk about it).

End result,  I got the rights back to For Rent from the publisher.

At that point, I figured I had one of two options…Well, OK, actually I had about ten options. But my very first option was Gemma Halliday Publishing.

See, back in 2016, FOR RENT was cruising up the charts and was this close hitting a USA TODAY List, but there was this stinking book that was out ranking me! I’d get up to 80 on the top 100, and that book would get to 79. No matter how hard I tried, I could not outsell this book and eventually, it just sailed up the charts, leaving me in the dust.

It, of course, was a GHP book.

I told myself that if I were to….yada…yada…yada…(more legal jargon here), then I’d reach out to GHP. Much to my delight, GHP happily took FOR RENT with a few caveats.

Add a murder.

Change the cover.

Change the name.

Change the love story.

Editorial tweaks.

OK, I guess that’s more than a few.

At first, I was hesitant. FOR RENT had done well….but GHP books did better. So I went with it.

(I swear this is my answer to most everything in life, “just go with it.”)

Fast-forward six months and here we are!

I spent much of release day in the dental chair.

Dumb, right?

Rewind to two weeks earlier.

Dentist: Your mouth is one giant cavity, we should take care of that. Does the 13th work?

Me (thinking): Ummmmm, gosh that day sounds familiar. What do I have on that day….huh? Ehhhh? Whatever. I’ll go with it.

So I scheduled a dental appointment AND to volunteer in my daughter’s classroom on release day.

Whatever. Life happens.

Also, my husband is actually a dentist. He’s just not my actual dentist. Because I actually don’t want him all up in my mouth like that. Cause that’s actually gross considering my mouth is one giant cavity.

Moving on.

It’s release day and I’m in the dental chair obsessively checking book rankings.

Drill. Drill. Drill. Drill. Suction. Suction. Suction. Reload Amazon. Reload Amazon. Reload B&N. Reload Amazon. Drill. Drill…This went on for hours.

Also, French Vanilla & Felonies is really hard to say when your lips are numb.

Anyway, got my teeth fixed, came home, made dinner, did a little dance when I saw the sales, then got back to writing book 3 (book two will be out in a bit!)

In short, it was an amazing release day, even with all the drilling.

Thank you to everyone who supported the book, and remember you can still order for the special release price!
